Beware the worm of self-conceit that feeds on the faults of others;
destroy the sense of self-importance
which eats like a canker the bud of one's pure aspirations.

God has a million Names. Select any Name of His, any Name that appeals to you, select any Form of His; every day when you awaken to the call of the brightening east, recite the Name, meditate on the Form; have the Name and Form as your companion, guide and guardian throughout the toils of the waking hours; when you retire for the night offer grateful homage to God in that Form with that Name, for being with you, by you, beside you, before you, behind you, all day long. If you stick to this discipline, you cannot falter or fail.

In all the efforts that you make, if you place your trust in a Higher Power, the work becomes easy.
This reliance on the Lord, the source of all power, results out of one's intense devotion.
When you travel by train, you only have to purchase the ticket, enter the right train and take a seat, leaving the rest to
the engine. So too, put your trust in the Lord and carry on to the best of your ability.
Have faith in the Lord and His Grace.
Try to earn it using the intelligence and the discrimination He has endowed you with.

Dharma (righteousness) is the foundation for the welfare of humanity, it is the eternal truth.
When the effulgence of Dharma fails to illumine human relationships, mankind will become enveloped in the darkness of
sorrow. Man must dedicate himself to Dharma so that he may live in peace and the world may also enjoy peace. He
cannot acquire lasting peace nor can he win the grace of God through any means other than by leading a Dharmic life.

The person who is free from all desires, who has not even the slightest inclination to possess or enjoy the sensory world,
who has no trace of egoism and who is ever immersed in the bliss of God consciousness, is always untouched by any
tinge of sorrow. He is firmly established in supreme joy and peace.

The mouse is the vehicle of Lord Vinayaka.
What is the inner significance of the mouse?
The mouse is attracted by smell and is considered as the embodiment of the sense of smell.
The mouse is a symbol of attachment to 'Vasana', which means both smell and worldly tendencies.
It is well known that if you want to catch a mouse, you place a strong-smelling bait inside the mouse-trap.
The mouse also symbolises the darkness of night.
The mouse can see well in the dark and moves about freely in the night.
As Vinayaka's vehicle, the mouse signifies an object that leads man from darkness to light.
Thus, the Vinayaka-principle signifies that which removes bad thoughts, bad habits and inculcates good thoughts and
good conduct in people.

The wickedness of no man is incorrigible. By conscious effort, habits can be changed and character refined.
By selfless service, renunciation, devotion and prayer, the old habits which bind man to earth can be discarded
and new habits which take us along the Divine path can be instilled into our lives.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY AUGUST 2009

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Vedanta (Vedic philosophy) declares: "Brahman is Sathya (Truth); the Cosmos is Mithya (illusory)". Your primary concern must be to understand whether you are real or unreal or what in you is real and what is unreal. It is only when you have recognised the truth of your own being that you can recognise the world as illusory and your own self as the only reality. The realized person asserts: "I am Brahman". Wherefrom has this statement emanated? What does it mean? It is a spontaneous expression and not the result of a thought or feeling. The "I" is boundless Infinite. When the finite individual merges in the Infinite "I", the "I" alone remains.

Self-realization should be the goal of human existence. It has to be reached through three stages: Self-confidence, self-satisfaction and self-sacrifice. Man should regard himself as the master of the body, the senses and the mind. He has to use the intellect to experience his oneness with the divine, the cosmic all-pervading consciousness. The flame of Prajnana (constant integrated awareness) which is in everyone is covered by the ash of worldly desires. When the ash is blown off, the fire of Brahman (Absolute Divinity) reveals itself in all its glory.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
It is attachment to property or position born out of a sense of possessiveness that is the cause of man's sorrow and unhappiness. Man must strive to get rid of this feeling of "I" and "mine" in order to experience enduring happiness. When everything appears to be going well, man forgets everything including himself. His ego gets inflated as a result of his achievements and acquisitions. He should realize that he is only a temporary beneficiary of what he possesses and has no permanent title to them. He should regard power or position as a moral responsibility carrying the obligation to discharge the duties relating to it. It is only when all actions are done in this spirit of moral imperative that man can experience genuine happiness and satisfaction.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The entire universe has been created out of the Will of God. God creates the universe and sustains it. The universe ultimately merges in God, the source of its origin. The universe is known as Vishwam. The correct meaning of Vishwam is that which is self-expansive and full of bliss. Vishwam is not merely a manifestation of physical matter; it is a direct manifestation of God. It is the very embodiment of the Cosmic Personality, with all His limbs. God is the primal cause behind the universe. The universe is the reflection of God. Vishwam and Vishnu (God) are not different from each other. This can be understood only through Viveka (discrimination).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
What is the inner significance of worshipping the elephant-faced deity Ganesha? The elephant is a symbol of might and magnitude. The elephant's foot is larger than that of any other animal. The elephant can make its way through the densest jungle. In this way, it signifies the quality of a leader who shows the way for others. The elephant is also known for its faithfulness and gratitude. These are the lessons man should learn from the elephant. Intelligence without gratitude is valueless. Every man should be grateful to those who have helped him.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
We become what we contemplate. By constant thought an ideal gets imprinted on our heart. When we fix our thoughts all the time on the evil that others do, our mind gets polluted by the evil. When, on the contrary, we fix our mind on the virtues or well-being of others, our mind is cleansed of wrong and entertains only good thoughts. No evil thought can penetrate the mind of a person wholly given to love and compassion. The thoughts we indulge in shape our nature; along with others, they affect us too.

HOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Without the sanction of the Lord, man cannot achieve anything in the world. The Divine is the basis for everything. Man, however, is filled with conceit that he is the one who is doing everything. This pride is the cause of his ruin. It is the cause of his frustration and disappointment. Man today is basing his life on nature and is hence forgetting God. This is a grievous mistake. You must place your faith in God, the Creator of the universe, and then enjoy what nature provides. Faith in God is the primary requisite for man.
