Just as a person is free while climbing a tree but once he starts falling then he has no power to check it. Smimilarly a living being is free in accumulating the Karmas but once accumulated it is beyond his power to control their fruition.

Pearls are not seen on the surface of the Ocean. It is only in the depth, we can collect pearls. The worldly experiences at best are similar to the shallow waves of the sea which roars, rise and recede. Only the accumulated dirt and trash is deposited on the sea shore. To collect the pearls, one has to dive deep and reach the bottom of sea. To escape from the aquatic creatures, the person has to smear his entire body with turmeric and oil. The smell of turmeric will deter the shark and other creatures to come near the person. In early times, there was no facility for carrying oxygen. Hence the divers will hold their breath for a minute or so and descend quickly to the depths by means of huge weight attached. Once they reach the bottom, they quickly collect the shells which may contain pearls. They detach themselves from the weighty stones and ascend quickly to the surface with the shells! The quest for the Self is akin to the above. We must practice detachment and with wisdom, we must turn to the Self within with single point aim. The name of God will act as the weight to descend into our inner realm. We must hold our thoughts fixed only to the purpose through meditation. This is akin to holding the breath. If we are fortunate, we will gain the Supreme wisdom of the Self! It is said in the scriptures that the "Knower of Self become the SELF". Om Sri Sai Ram.
